Hulberton, New York facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hulberton is a small community, also called a hamlet, located in the town of Murray. You can find it in Orleans County, New York, in the United States. This special place got its name from an important person named Isaac Henry Scott Hulbert.

Who Was Isaac Hulbert?

Isaac Henry Scott Hulbert was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In 1824, he first arrived in a place called Sandy Creek. Just one year later, in 1825, he moved to a nearby community known as Scio.

Hulbert's Life and Work

Isaac Hulbert was a very active member of his new community. He was involved in many important projects. For example, on March 6, 1830, he was chosen to lead the building committee for the Methodist Episcopal Church. This shows he was trusted to help build important parts of the community. He also served for a long time as a Justice of the Peace. A Justice of the Peace is like a local official who helps with legal matters and keeps things fair in the community.

The Erie Canal and Business

The area where Hulbert settled became very successful, especially because it was located along the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal was a famous waterway that helped people transport goods and travel across New York. Isaac Hulbert ran a business there, dealing with farm products like fruits and vegetables. Being near the canal helped his business grow and made the community more prosperous.

How Hulberton Got Its Name

The community needed its own post office because the closest one was in Sandy Creek. Isaac Hulbert was chosen to be the first postmaster, which meant he was in charge of the mail. This new post office opened in 1835.

Why the Name Changed

The community decided to change its name to Hulberton to honor Isaac Hulbert. This was partly because of his important role as postmaster. Another reason for the name change was that there was already a town named Scio in Allegany County, New York. To avoid confusion, the local Scio became Hulberton, celebrating the man who helped it grow.
