Scio is a small town located in Allegany County, New York. It is in the southern part of the county. In 2020, about 1,625 people lived here. The town is just north of the village of Wellsville.

History of Scio
The first person to settle in Scio was Joseph Knight in 1805. He was a minuteman during the American Revolution, which was a war for America's independence. Knight came from Oneida County. A local stream, Knights Creek, is named after him.
The town of Scio was officially created in 1823. It was formed from a larger area that was once part of the town of Angelica. Over the years, parts of Scio were used to create other nearby towns. These included Amity in 1830, Willing in 1851, and Wellsville in 1855.
Famous People from Scio
- Jason Dunham was born in Scio. He was a Marine Corporal and received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest military award for bravery. He earned it for his actions during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
- Burton Millard was also born in Scio. He became a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is a group of lawmakers in the state of Wisconsin.
Geography and Nature
Scio covers an area of about 91.5 square kilometers (about 35.3 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.1 square kilometers, is water.
The Genesee River is an important natural feature. It flows north through the town of Scio. Two smaller streams, Knights Creek and Vandermark Creek, flow into the Genesee River near the village of Scio.
Roads and Railways
New York State Route 19 is a main road that goes through Scio. It runs from north to south. The town is also on the main railway line of the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad.

Communities and Places in Scio
- Knights Creek – This is a small village, also called a hamlet. It is located on County Road 9, near the southern border of the town. A stream with the same name flows nearby. Both are named after the first settlers of the town.
- Norton Summit – This is a place found north of Petrolia. It is located on County Route 18.
- Petrolia – This is another hamlet in Scio. It is on County Road 18, close to the southern town line.
- Scio – This is the main hamlet and a census-designated place. It is where County Roads 9 and 10 meet New York State Route 19. The Genesee River flows past this hamlet.
