Willing is a small town in Allegany County, New York, United States. It is located on the southern border of the county. The village of Wellsville is just north of Willing. In 2020, about 1,295 people lived in the town.

History of Willing

The area that would become the town of Willing was first settled around 1819. The town itself was officially formed in 1852. It was created from parts of two other towns: Independence and Scio.

In 1875, the population of Willing was 1,713 people. In the fall of 1884, a powerful tornado hit the town. It caused a lot of damage and sadly, some people lost their lives.

Geography of Willing

Willing covers a total area of about 93.9 square kilometers (about 36.27 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a very small part (about 0.08 square kilometers) being water.

The Genesee River flows through the town, heading north. The southern border of Willing is also the border of Pennsylvania, specifically Potter County.

Several important roads pass through Willing:

  • New York State Route 19 is a main highway that runs north and south.
  • New York State Route 248 is a main highway that runs east and west.
  • New York State Route 248A, also known as Cryder Creek Road, goes through the southeast part of the town.

Communities and Locations in Willing

The Town of Willing includes several smaller communities and specific locations:

  • Hallsport – This is a small settlement, also called a hamlet. It is located on Route 248, near Chenunda Creek, in the northeast part of the town.
  • Mapes – You can find this location near County Road 29, close to the western border of the town.
  • Paynesville – This location is in the southeast corner of the town, on Route 248A.
  • Shongo – This hamlet is on Route 19, near the southern town line and the Genesee River. Its name comes from a Seneca chief.
  • Stannards – This hamlet is located right on the northern border of the town.
  • Stone Dam – This location is in the southwest corner of the town, on County Road 29.
  • York Corners – This hamlet is found where Route 19 and County Road 39 meet, just south of Stannards.
