Angelica is a small town located in the center of Allegany County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,284 people lived there.

The town gets its name from Angelica Schuyler Church. She was a very active and smart woman. Angelica was the sister of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton and the daughter of General Philip Schuyler. She was also the sister-in-law of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The town was named by Philip Schuyler Church, who was Angelica's son. He was one of the first European settlers in the area. The small village of Angelica is found within this town.

History of Angelica

The area where Angelica is located was first settled around 1802. The town of Angelica was officially created in 1805. It was formed from the town of Leicester before Allegany County even existed. This makes Angelica the oldest town in Allegany County.

The town hall is in the Old Allegany County Courthouse. This building is very old and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Other historic places nearby include Belvidere and the Moses Van Campen House.

How Angelica Got Its Name

Angelica Schuyler Church was an important American woman. She encouraged other women to speak up for themselves. She was known for being witty and social. Angelica eloped with John Church, who used a different name at the time.

In 1797, the United States paid back a war debt to John Church. They gave him 100,000 acres of land in Western New York. Angelica’s son, Philip Schuyler Church, traveled to this land to claim it. He brought his surveyor, Moses Van Campen, with him.

Philip planned a village that looked a bit like Paris, France. It had a circular drive in the middle, with streets coming out like a star. Five churches were planned around the circle. The village park is in the center of this circular drive. Philip named his new village Angelica to honor his mother.

Philip later married Anna Matilda Stewart. She was the daughter of General Walter Stewart. For their honeymoon, they traveled to the area. They built a small house, which became known as the "white house." In 1804, they built a large mansion called "Belvidere". This mansion still stands today near Angelica, New York.

Geography of Angelica
