The Hull New Theatre is a famous theatre located in Kingston upon Hull, England. It first opened its doors in 1939. This theatre is a special place where you can watch many different kinds of shows.

You can enjoy exciting musicals, beautiful opera and ballet performances, and interesting drama plays. They also have fun shows just for children. A big event each year is the Christmas pantomime, which is a lively and funny show for the whole family.

A Special Building

The Hull New Theatre is now a Grade II listed building. This means it's a very important historical building. It is protected by law because of its special design and history.

Big Changes for City of Culture

The theatre closed for a while on January 4, 2016. This was right after the Christmas pantomime season. It needed a big update and refurbishment. This was to get ready for Hull to be the UK City of Culture in 2017.

Being the UK City of Culture means a city gets to show off its arts and culture. It brings lots of visitors and new projects. The theatre's update was a huge part of this plan.

Funding and Delays

The city council planned an £11.7 million project to improve the theatre. They hoped to get some money from the Arts Council, but that didn't happen at first. However, the government later announced £13 million for Hull's City of Culture work. This money helped cover the costs for the theatre's improvements.

There was a small delay in the project. The theatre was expected to reopen in summer 2017.

Grand Reopening

In early 2017, it was announced that The Royal Ballet would perform to officially reopen the theatre. This special show happened on September 16, 2017.

The theatre reopened with a bigger seating area, now holding 1,330 people. The Royal Ballet performance was completely sold out! It was even shown live on a big screen in Queen's Gardens. About 5,000 more people watched the show there.
