Hulua is a group of spiders, known as a genus, found in the South Pacific. These spiders belong to a family called Toxopidae. Scientists Raymond Robert Forster and C. L. Wilton first described them in 1973.
When they were first discovered, Hulua spiders were thought to be part of the Desidae family, which includes spiders that live near water. However, in 2017, after more study, scientists moved them to the Toxopidae family.
Meet the Hulua Spiders
As of May 2019, there are four known species of Hulua spiders. All of these species live only in New Zealand.
- Hulua convoluta Forster & Wilton, 1973 (This is the main example species for the group)
- Hulua manga Forster & Wilton, 1973
- Hulua minima Forster & Wilton, 1973
- Hulua pana Forster & Wilton, 1973
These names show that Forster and Wilton discovered all four species at the same time in 1973.
