Humberto Ramos's Comic Journey
Starting His Art Career
Humberto Ramos started his journey in the comic book world in 1989. He began working at a company called Kaboom Cómics. This was the start of his exciting career as a penciller, which means he draws the initial artwork for comic books.
Drawing for DC Comics
Later, Humberto was hired by DC Comics. He became the main artist for their comic series Impulse. This comic launched in March 1995. It was a spin-off from the popular Flash comics.
The Impulse series was a superhero and teen comedy. It was written by Mark Waid. The story followed a young speedster named Bart Allen. Bart was the grandson of the second Flash, Barry Allen. The comic showed his adventures and challenges as he grew up.
Creating His Own Stories
In 1998, Ramos helped start a new comic book imprint called Cliffhanger. He teamed up with other famous comic artists, Joe Madureira and J. Scott Campbell. They wanted to publish their own comic books. These comics would be different from the usual superhero stories.
Cliffhanger was part of Jim Lee's Image Comics division, Wildstorm. Ramos's first comic for Cliffhanger was Crimson. It ran for 24 issues and two special editions. After Crimson, he created a fantasy and mystery series called Out There.
Humberto also started drawing the covers for Peter Parker: Spider-Man. He began with issue #30. Later, he also drew the inside art for a four-issue story arc. This story was called "A Death in the Family." It was later collected as Spider-Man: Return of the Goblin. Paul Jenkins wrote these stories.
Working on Spider-Man Again
After his work with Cliffhanger ended in 2003, Ramos started a new Spider-Man comic. This one was called The Spectacular Spider-Man. He worked again with writer Paul Jenkins. For his amazing cover art on this series, Ramos was nominated for a Harvey Award in 2005.
While Ramos was busy with Spectacular Spider-Man, another comic he created was published. It was a six-issue series called Kamikaze. Although Humberto created it, Francisco Herrera drew the artwork. WildStorm published it under the Cliffhanger imprint.
In 2005, Ramos also had his own six-issue comic series called Revelations. This series was published by Dark Horse Comics.
Return to Marvel Comics
After Revelations, Humberto Ramos went back to Marvel Comics. He joined writer Marc Guggenheim on the Wolverine comic series. Their first issue together was #42, released in March 2006.
Around the same time, Ramos also illustrated a space opera series. It was called Kookaburra K. This series had three 46-page comic albums. He drew them for a French comic publisher called Soleil Productions. A French comic creator named Crisse wrote the stories.
Recent Popular Works
From 2008 to 2009, Ramos worked with writer Terry Moore on the Runaways comic. In 2010, he became one of the regular artists for The Amazing Spider-Man.
In April 2014, Ramos and writer Dan Slott launched a new version of Amazing Spider-Man. This was part of the Marvel NOW! initiative. The very first issue of this new series became "The Best Selling Comic of the 21st Century." This shows how popular his artwork is!
In 2016, Ramos and writer Mark Waid worked together again. They co-created a new superhero team for Marvel called The Champions.
