Humphreys is a small, unincorporated community located in the southeastern part of Jackson County, Oklahoma. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually managed by the county.
Humphreys is about 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) southeast of a larger city called Altus. It's also about six miles (9.7 kilometers) northeast of Tipton, which is in a nearby county called Tillman County.
The History of Humphreys
Humphreys was officially started in the year 1909. It was named after a local rancher, a person who owns and manages a large farm for raising cattle. His name was James Humphreys.
Railroads and Community Growth
A very old railroad line, once part of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad system, goes right through the Humphreys community. Railroads were super important in the early 1900s for moving goods and people, helping small communities like Humphreys grow.
