Hundwil has a long history. It was first mentioned in old writings way back in the year 921. Back then, it was called Huntwilare.

Hundwil covers an area of about 24 square kilometers (about 9.3 square miles). A large part of this land, almost 60%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 31% of the area. The rest of the land includes buildings, roads, rivers, and mountains.
Hundwil is located on the road between the towns of Herisau and Appenzell. It was once the main town of the Hinterland district.

It stands tall at 2,502 meters (8,209 feet). Santis is shared with other nearby towns. The cable car station at Schwägalp, which takes people up the mountain, is also part of Hundwil.
