Hunter Cantwell was a talented American football player who played as a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on December 30, 1985. After playing college football for the Louisville Cardinals, he joined the Carolina Panthers in 2009. He spent time on the team's practice squad, which is like a training team, before joining the main roster.
Later, Cantwell played for the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. After his playing career, he became a quarterbacks coach for Campbellsville University. He also coached high school football, serving as head coach at Carroll County High from 2017 to 2018. Since 2019, he has been the head coach at Christian Academy of Louisville.

Early Football Days
Hunter Cantwell went to Paducah Tilghman High School in Paducah, Kentucky. He became the best passer in his school's history. He completed 458 out of 756 passes, gaining 7,272 yards and scoring 70 touchdowns. He also set a state record in the Kentucky 3-A playoff for passing yards in one game, with 409 yards. As a starting quarterback, his team won 31 games and lost only 8.
College Football Career
Cantwell joined the Louisville Cardinals football team in 2005.
First Games at Louisville
On November 25, 2005, the main quarterback, Brian Brohm, got hurt during a game against Syracuse. Cantwell stepped in and completed 3 of 5 passes for 66 yards. He helped the Cardinals win the game 41–17.
On December 2, 2005, Cantwell started his first game against Connecticut. He completed 16 of 25 passes for 271 yards and scored 1 touchdown. Louisville won that game 30–20.
In the 2006 Gator Bowl against Virginia Tech, Cantwell played very well. He threw for 216 yards and scored 3 touchdowns. Even though Virginia Tech won the game 35–24, Cantwell was named the Cardinals' Most Valuable Player for the Gator Bowl.
Success in 2006
On September 16, 2006, Brian Brohm got injured again. Cantwell entered the game against Miami and completed 3 of 4 passes for 113 yards and 1 touchdown. Louisville won 31–7.
Cantwell started the next two games for the Cardinals. Against Kansas State, he completed 18 of 26 passes for 173 yards and 1 touchdown, helping Louisville win 24–6. Against Middle Tennessee State, Cantwell completed 17 of 32 passes for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Cardinals won that game easily, 44–17.
Cantwell helped the Cardinals win many games during the 2006 season. The team finished with 12 wins and only 1 loss. This great season helped the Cardinals earn a spot in the 2007 Orange Bowl, which was the highest-ranked bowl game Louisville had ever played in. The Cardinals won the Orange Bowl 24–13 against Wake Forest, with Brohm as quarterback.
Later College Years
In 2007, Cantwell played less often. In 2008, he helped the team start with 5 wins and 2 losses. However, the Cardinals lost their last five games, finishing the season with 5 wins and 7 losses. This was the first time in many years that the Cardinals football team did not play in a bowl game for two years in a row.
Professional Football Career
Carolina Panthers
After the 2009 NFL draft, Hunter Cantwell was not chosen by any team right away. However, he signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. He was first placed on the team's practice squad. This is a group of players who practice with the team but are not on the main roster. On December 24, 2009, Cantwell was moved to the main team after the starting quarterback, Jake Delhomme, was injured. Cantwell left the Panthers in September 2010.
Baltimore Ravens
On September 5, 2010, Cantwell joined the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. He was briefly released but then signed back to the practice squad a few days later. He was released from the Ravens' practice squad in September 2011.
Coaching Career
In 2012, Hunter Cantwell had an offer to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he decided to become a quarterbacks coach for the Campbellsville University football team instead. He coached there for several years.
From November 2016 to 2018, Cantwell was the head coach at Carroll County High School in Kentucky. In March 2019, he was hired as the head coach at Christian Academy of Louisville, where he continues to coach today.
