The path of hurricane Edna in 1954

Hurricane Edna was a very powerful storm that hit the East Coast of the United States in September 1954. It was a strong hurricane that brought heavy winds and rain. Edna made landfall, meaning it came ashore, over Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

The storm caused a lot of damage, especially in New Hampshire and Maine. Sadly, 20 people lost their lives because of Hurricane Edna. This hurricane hit just a few days after another big storm, Hurricane Carol, had affected the same areas.

Edna's Journey and Impact

Hurricane Edna was a major hurricane, reaching Category 3 strength. This means it had very strong winds, over 111 miles per hour! After forming in the Atlantic Ocean, it moved towards the United States.

When Edna hit Cape Cod, it caused a lot of problems. Many homes and buildings were damaged. Trees were knocked down, and power went out for many people. The storm also brought heavy rain, which led to flooding in some areas.

Damage and Recovery Efforts

The states of New Hampshire and Maine were hit especially hard by Hurricane Edna. Roads were blocked by fallen trees and debris. It took a lot of effort to clean up after the storm. People worked together to help their communities recover.

Because Edna hit so soon after Hurricane Carol, it made the recovery even harder. The same areas had to deal with two big storms in a very short time. This showed how strong and prepared communities needed to be for such natural events.
