Hurricane Inez facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hurricane Inez was a very powerful and dangerous storm that happened in the fall of 1966. It was a tropical cyclone, which is a big swirling storm system, and it grew into a very strong hurricane. Inez had winds blowing at over 150 miles per hour, which is almost as strong as a Category 5 hurricane, the highest level!

This huge storm traveled across many places, including Cuba, the Florida Keys in the United States, the island of Hispaniola (where Haiti and the Dominican Republic are), and Mexico. Hurricane Inez caused a lot of damage, about $226.5 million in 1966 money. Sadly, it also led to the deaths of over 1,000 people.

Because of how deadly and destructive it was, the name Inez was taken off the list of hurricane names the very next year. This means no future hurricanes will ever be called Inez.
