The Hyde Log Cabin is a very old and special log cabin located in Grand Isle, Vermont, United States. It was built way back in 1783! The Hyde family lived in this cabin for 150 years. Many people think it's one of the oldest log cabins in the entire U.S. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

About the Hyde Log Cabin

Where It Is Located

The Hyde Log Cabin is found on the east side of U.S. Route 2. It's just north of the Grand Isle Elementary School. The cabin shares its land with a small schoolhouse built in 1814.

What It Looks Like

The cabin is a simple, one-story building. It's made from peeled cedar logs. These logs are quite thick, about 14 to 18 inches across. The cabin is about 20 feet long and 25 feet wide. It has a sloped roof called a gabled roof. Inside, there's one main room with a small loft area above. The large stone chimney you see today was rebuilt in the 1900s.

How It Was Built

The cabin was built in 1783 by Jedediah Hyde, Jr. He was a surveyor for Ira and Ethan Allen. The Allen brothers owned a lot of land in the Grand Isle area. Jedediah Hyde, Jr. helped them map out their property.

A Family Home for 150 Years

Jedediah Hyde, Jr. and his wife raised ten children in this very cabin! It stayed in the Hyde family for a long time. Members of the Hyde family lived here for 150 years. Imagine all the stories those walls could tell!

Moving and Restoring the Cabin

The cabin wasn't always in its current spot. In 1946, it was moved about two miles from its original location. Since then, it has been repaired and restored many times. This helps keep it looking good and safe for visitors.

Visiting the Cabin Today

Today, the state of Vermont owns the Hyde Log Cabin. The Grand Isle Historical Society takes care of it. They operate it as a historic house museum. This means you can visit it and learn about how people lived long ago. The cabin is usually open on weekends from May to October. It's a great way to step back in time!
