Hydesville is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southeast of Fortuna. It sits at an elevation of about 364 feet (111 meters). In 2020, about 1,244 people lived there.

History of Hydesville

The Hydesville post office first opened in 1861. The town was named after John Hyde, who donated the land where the community was built.

In 1879, Hydesville even had a professional minor league baseball team. They played in a league called the Humboldt County League, which did not last very long. For a period between 1910 and 1918, the town was temporarily called Goose Prairie before its name was changed back to Hydesville.

Community Organizations

Hydesville has its own U.S. post office. It also has an elementary school, whose sports teams are known as the Hydesville Wildcats.

For federal government representation, Hydesville is part of California's 2nd congressional district.
