History of Hyndland Church
Hyndland Parish Church was started when the Hyndland area began to grow with new homes in the late 1800s. At first, there was a simple tin church across the street from where the current church stands.
Building the Church
The church you see today was designed by an architect named William Leiper. It was built between 1886 and 1887. The style of the building is called Neo-Gothic. This means it looks like older Gothic churches from medieval times.
The church has a special shape called a cruciform, which looks like a cross from above. It includes a main hall called a nave, side areas called aisles, and parts that stick out on the sides called transepts. There is also a special area at the front called a chancel.
Joining Churches and New Uses
In 2017, Hyndland Parish Church joined with Broomhill Parish Church. Together, they formed the Broomhill Hyndland Parish Church. The Broomhill building became the main place for church services.
Hyndland Parish Church was then given a new name: The Kingsborough Sanctuary. Today, it is still used for worship, but it also hosts concerts and other events.
Art and Features Inside the Church
The church has some amazing features inside, including a very old organ and beautiful stained glass windows.
The Historic Organ
Inside the church, you can find an original organ built in 1887 by Henry Willis. This organ is quite large and has three keyboards and many different sounds it can make.
Stained Glass Windows
The church is also famous for its collection of stained glass windows. These windows were made by many different artists over the years. Some of the artists include Norman Macdougall (1889), Douglas Strachan (1921), Douglas Hamilton (1930), Gordon Webster (1961), William Wilson (1962), Sax Shaw (1968), Paul Lucky (1984), and Rab MacInnes (1999).
There are also three more windows made by Oscar Paterson in 1897. These windows were moved to Hyndland Parish Church from another church called St Bride's Church in Partick, which was later taken down.
