Hyphalus wisei is a tiny beetle that lives in the ocean's intertidal zone. This means it lives in the area between high and low tide. It is found only in New Zealand, which makes it an endemic species.

What Does It Look Like?

The adult Hyphalus wisei beetle is very small. It is only about 1.1 to 1.2 millimeters long. That's about the size of a tiny speck! Its body is black. It has light-colored hairs, called setae, which make it look a bit grey.

The young beetles, called larvae, are a bit longer. They are about 2 millimeters long. Larvae can be light brown to dark brown. Both the adult and young beetles look very much like another species, Hyphalus insularis.

Where Does It Live?

Hyphalus wisei is found in specific places in New Zealand. Scientists have found this beetle in Rodney County. This area is near a place called Te Hāwere-a-Maki / Goat Island. It has also been discovered on Cuvier Island.
