Högalid Church (called Högalidskyrkan in Swedish) is a very special building in Stockholm, Sweden. It is a protected church, which means it's an important historical site. The church was designed by a famous architect named Ivar Tengbom.

It was built between 1916 and 1923 on a high piece of land in the Södermalm area. This area was once quite empty but later became a beautiful park. Because of its high location, Högalid Church is one of the most noticeable buildings in Stockholm. It stands proudly across the water from the Stockholm City Hall, another famous landmark. The church is a great example of the National Romantic style of architecture in Sweden.

Art and Design Inside the Church

Högalid Church is home to many amazing artworks. These pieces make the church even more beautiful and interesting.

The Largest Crucifix

One of the most impressive artworks is a very large crucifix. A crucifix is a cross with a figure of Jesus on it. This one is the biggest in all of Scandinavia! It was sculpted by an artist named Gunnar Torhamn.

Other Works by Gunnar Torhamn

Gunnar Torhamn also created other art for the church. He painted colorful pictures, called frescoes, in the church's baptistry. The baptistry is where baptisms take place. He also sculpted decorations for the chancel, which is the area around the altar, and for the organ.

The Retable and Older Treasures

The retable is a decorated screen or panel behind the altar. It was sculpted by Erik Jerke in a style called neo-Byzantine. This style looks back to ancient Byzantine art. The church also has some items that are even older than the church itself. These include a baptismal font from the 1500s and two altar candelabras from the 1700s. Candelabras are large candle holders.

Surrounding Buildings and Graveyard

Högalid Church is not just one building. It's part of a larger area that includes other important structures.

Community Hall and Parsonage

Next to the church, there is a community hall and a parsonage. A parsonage is a house where the church's priest or minister lives. Both of these buildings were also designed by Ivar Tengbom, the same architect who designed the church.

The Columbarium and Chapel

There is also a columbarium, which was built in 1939. A columbarium is a place where urns containing ashes of people who have been cremated are kept. The church's graveyard also has its own chapel. This chapel is decorated with beautiful mosaics created by an artist named Einar Forseth.
