Iñaki Anasagasti is a politician from Venezuela and Spain. He was born on November 16, 1947. He is a member of the Basque Nationalist Party, a political group in Spain.

Early Life and Education

Iñaki Anasagasti was born in Cumaná, Venezuela. His parents were from Spain and had moved to Venezuela. His father was a strong supporter of Basque nationalism and a member of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV). He had left Spain after the Spanish Civil War.

In the mid-1950s, Iñaki's parents decided that he and his three brothers should be educated in the Basque Country of Spain. So, they sent their children to live with their grandparents in San Sebastián. Iñaki studied in San Sebastián from 1955 to 1961. After that, he studied in Bilbao until 1965.

Time in Venezuela

In 1965, Iñaki's father passed away, and he returned to Venezuela. He stayed there for ten years. During this time, he became involved with the Basque Nationalist Party members who were also living in Caracas.

He studied Journalism and Sociology at the Universidad Católica Andres Bello, a university run by Jesuits. There, he met Maria Esther Solabarrieta, and they married in 1976. In the early 1970s, he became the president of Euzko Gaztedi Indarra, which was the youth group of the EGI in Caracas. He also worked with Radio Euzkadi, a radio station that broadcast daily in Venezuela. He also wrote for Gudari, a magazine that supported the Basque resistance.

Return to Spain and Political Start

In August 1975, Iñaki Anasagasti moved back to San Sebastián in Spain. He became the director of Euzkadi, a newspaper for the PNV.

In 1976, he faced some difficulties and was briefly held. Later, in 1977, he was chosen to be a member of the PNV's regional council in Biscay. He held this important position until 1980.

Serving in the Spanish Parliament

In 1980, Iñaki Anasagasti was elected to the Basque Parliament. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) there from 1980 to 1986.

In 1986, he was elected to the Congress of Deputies, which is one of the two main parts of Spain's national parliament. He represented the region of Vizcaya. He was the leader for the Basque Nationalist Parliament Group in the Congress until 2004.

In 2004, he was elected as a senator for Vizcaya, which is the other main part of Spain's parliament. He was re-elected as a senator in 2008. In the Senate, he was chosen to be the First Secretary of the Bureau of the Senate during the 8th legislature.
