Early Life and Education
Iñaki Anasagasti was born in Cumaná, Venezuela. His parents were Spanish and had left Spain. His father was a Basque nationalist. He was also a member of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV). His family had left Spain after the Spanish Civil War.
In the mid-1950s, Iñaki's parents wanted him and his three brothers to study in the Basque Country. They sent their children back to San Sebastián, Spain. There, their grandparents took care of them. Iñaki studied in San Sebastián from 1955 to 1961. After that, he studied in Bilbao until 1965.
Time in Venezuela
In 1965, Iñaki's father passed away. Iñaki then returned to Venezuela and stayed there for ten years. He became involved with the Basque Nationalist Party members living in Caracas. He studied Journalism and Sociology at a university run by Jesuits.
While in Venezuela, he met Maria Esther Solabarrieta. They later married in 1976. In the early 1970s, he became the president of Euzko Gaztedi Indarra. This was a youth group of the EGI in Caracas. He also worked with Radio Euzkadi, which broadcast daily in Venezuela. He helped with a resistance magazine called Gudari.
Return to Spain and Early Politics
In August 1975, Iñaki Anasagasti moved back to San Sebastián, Spain. He became the director of the PNV's newspaper, Euzkadi. On April 1, 1976, he was arrested. He was jailed for three days by order of the Minister of the Interior.
In 1977, he was chosen to be a member of the PNV's regional council in Biscay. This group is called Bizkai Buru Batzar. He held this position until 1980.
Political Career in Spain
In 1980, Iñaki Anasagasti was elected to the Basque Parliament. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) there until 1986. In 1986, he was elected to the Congress of Deputies. This is one of the main parts of the Spanish Parliament. He represented the region of Vizcaya.
He served in the Congress of Deputies until 2004. During this time, he was the leader for the Basque Nationalist Parliament Group. In 2004, he was elected as a senator for Vizcaya. He was reelected in 2008. In the Senate, he was chosen to be the First Secretary in the 8th legislature.
