Playing Career Highlights
Early Years and Real Sociedad
Iñigo Díaz de Cerio was born in San Sebastián, a city in the Basque Country region of Spain. He learned to play football at the youth academy of Real Sociedad.
He played for Real Sociedad B, which is the club's reserve team. In the 2005–06 season, he was the top scorer in the third division. This means he scored more goals than any other player in that league.
On 12 February 2006, Iñigo made his first appearance in La Liga. This is Spain's top football league. He played for the main Real Sociedad team in a match against Atlético Madrid.
In the 2007–08 season, playing in the second division, he scored 16 goals. His team finished fourth, almost making it back to the top league.
Serious Injury and Recovery
On 8 November 2008, Iñigo had a very serious injury. It happened during a game when he collided with a player from SD Eibar. He broke two bones in his right lower leg: the tibia and the fibula.
After surgery, doctors said his recovery would take a very long time. He missed most of the season because of this injury.
Moving to Athletic Bilbao
In June 2009, Iñigo joined Athletic Bilbao. This club is a rival of Real Sociedad, and they are both from the Basque Country. He signed a four-year contract after his deal with Real Sociedad ended.
He returned to playing football almost a year after his injury. On 5 November 2009, he played for 30 minutes in a UEFA Europa League match. This was a big step in his recovery.
Loan Spells and Retirement
In August 2010, Iñigo was loaned to Córdoba CF for one year. A loan means he played for another team temporarily. However, he was called back to Athletic Bilbao later that season.
From 2011 to 2014, Iñigo played in the second division for two different teams. He scored a total of 22 goals for CD Numancia and CD Mirandés.
In June 2014, when he was 30 years old, Iñigo Díaz de Cerio announced that he was retiring from football.
