Playing for Football Clubs
Iñigo Díaz de Cerio was born in San Sebastián, a city in the Basque Country region of Spain. He learned to play football at Real Sociedad, a well-known club.
Early Career and First Team
Iñigo started playing for Real Sociedad's B-team. This is a team for younger players who are still developing their skills. In the 2005–06 season, he was the best scorer in the third division league.
He made his first appearance for the main Real Sociedad team on February 12, 2006. This was in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. In the 2007–08 season, he scored 16 goals in the second division. His team finished fourth, almost getting promoted to the top league.
A Difficult Injury
On November 8, 2008, Iñigo had a very serious injury during a game. He collided with a player from SD Eibar and broke two bones in his right leg: the tibia and the fibula.
Doctors said his recovery would take a very long time. He missed most of the 2008–09 season because of this injury.
Moving to Athletic Bilbao
In June 2009, after his contract with Real Sociedad ended, Iñigo joined Athletic Bilbao. This club is also from the Basque Country. He signed a four-year deal with them.
He returned to playing football almost a year after his injury. On November 5, 2009, he played for 30 minutes in a UEFA Europa League game.
Loan Spells and Retirement
In August 2010, Iñigo was loaned to Córdoba CF for a year. A loan means he played for another team temporarily. However, he was called back to Athletic Bilbao later that season.
From 2011 to 2014, Iñigo played in the second division for two different teams: CD Numancia and CD Mirandés. During these years, he scored a total of 22 goals.
In June 2014, when he was 30 years old, Iñigo Díaz de Cerio announced that he was retiring from professional football.
