IBM Quantum System One is a special kind of computer made by IBM. It was the first commercial quantum computer that uses "quantum circuits." IBM showed it to the world in January 2019.

This amazing computer system is kept inside a sealed cube made of special glass. This glass cube helps keep the inside environment just right. Each side of the cube is about 2.7 meters (9 feet) wide and tall. Hanging down from the middle of the ceiling inside the cube is a dilution refrigerator. This refrigerator keeps the computer super cold. Inside it is a 20-qubit "transmon" quantum processor. This processor is the brain of the quantum computer. The system was first tested for two weeks in the summer of 2018 in Milan, Italy.

What is a Quantum Computer?

A quantum computer is a new type of computer. It uses the strange rules of quantum mechanics to solve problems. Regular computers use bits, which are either 0 or 1. Quantum computers use "qubits." Qubits can be 0, 1, or both at the same time! This allows them to do many calculations much faster.

Building and Using the System One

The IBM Quantum System One was created by IBM Research. They also got help from the Map Project Office and Universal Design Studio. Many big science places use this system. These include CERN, ExxonMobil, Fermilab, Argonne National Laboratory, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. They can connect to the system from far away to use its power.

Where You Can See It

From April 6 to May 31, 2019, a copy of the IBM Quantum System One was on display. You could see it at the Boston Museum of Science. This showed people what a real quantum computer looks like. On June 15, 2021, IBM put the first real Quantum System One in Germany. It is located at their main office in Ehningen.
