Club History
How IFK Eskilstuna Started
IFK Eskilstuna was created on September 9, 1897. It was the seventh club to be part of the "Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna" group. At first, the club focused on many different sports. These included athletics, like running, and even speed skating. A famous speed skater named Herman Söderbäck won national titles for the club in 1900 and 1906. Over the years, IFK Eskilstuna also had teams for handball, ice hockey, cross-country skiing, and orienteering.
Football Beginnings
The football team at IFK Eskilstuna started playing in 1901. They quickly became a strong team. In 1910, they were one of the first clubs to play in the new Svenska Serien league. They have a long-standing friendly competition with another local team, Eskilstuna City FK.
One of their biggest achievements was winning the Swedish Championship in 1921. They beat IK Sleipner 2–1 in a big final match in Stockholm. Two years later, in 1923, they reached the championship final again but lost to AIK.
Playing in the Top League
IFK Eskilstuna was part of the very first Allsvenskan season in 1924–25. Allsvenskan is Sweden's highest football league. They played in Allsvenskan for a total of 14 seasons. Their best finish was in the 1931–32 Allsvenskan season when they came in fifth place. Their last season in the top league was in 1964.
Recent Years and Current Status
After their time in Allsvenskan, IFK Eskilstuna played in lower divisions. In 1981, they almost made it back to the top league but lost in the play-offs. They had similar close calls in 1987 and 1988.
In 1992, the club moved down from Division 1. Since then, they have played in the middle levels of the Swedish football league system. As of now, IFK Eskilstuna plays in Division 3 Västra Svealand. This is the fifth tier of Swedish football. They play their home games at Tunavallen in Eskilstuna.
In November 2024, Armin Suljic became the new head coach for the club.
