Iacobeni (which is also called Jakobeny in German) is a special kind of area in Romania. It's known as a commune. You can find it in Suceava County, which is in the historical region of Bukovina in northeastern Romania.
Iacobeni is made up of two main villages: Iacobeni and Mestecăniș. Until 2002, two other villages, Botoș and Ciocănești, were part of this commune. But then, they became their own separate commune called Ciocănești.
This commune is located in the western part of Suceava County. It's about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from Suceava, the main city of the county. Iacobeni sits at a high altitude of about 832 meters (2,730 feet) above sea level. It is also located right on the banks of the Bistrița River.
A Look Back in Time
For a long time, until the middle of the 20th century, Iacobeni was home to many German-speaking people. These people were called Zipser Germans. They were part of a larger group of Bukovina Germans living in the Bukovina region.
They first came to this area in the late 1700s. This was during a time when the Habsburg monarchy ruled the region. Later, this area became part of Austria-Hungary. These German communities helped shape the history and culture of Iacobeni for many years.
