About Iakovos Kambanellis

Iakovos Kambanellis was born on December 2, 1921, in Hora, a town on the island of Naxos, Greece. He was one of nine children. His father, Stefanos, was a pharmacist, and his mother, Aikaterini, came from an old family in Istanbul.

Kambanellis became one of the most important Greek playwrights of the 1900s. Many people call him the "father of modern Greek theater."

He survived the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp during World War II. This was a very difficult experience. Later, he wrote the words for the "Mauthausen Trilogy" songs, with music by Mikis Theodorakis. He also wrote a book called Mauthausen, which shared his experiences from the camp.

Iakovos Kambanellis wrote scripts for at least 12 movies. He even directed three of them himself. He was also a talented lyricist, writing the words for more than 100 songs.

He was a member of important cultural groups in Greece. From 1981 to 1987, he was in charge of the radio section for the Greek National Broadcasting Company. In 2000, he became a member of the Academy of Athens, a very respected group of scientists and artists. That same year, he received a special award called the Order of Phoenix from the President of Greece.

His Final Years

Iakovos Kambanellis had health problems, including kidney failure. He was taken to the hospital on February 4, 2011. He passed away on March 29, 2011, at the age of 89. This was just nine days after his wife also passed away.
