Ian Axel (born March 28, 1985) is an American singer and songwriter. He became known for his song "This Is the New Year". Later, he teamed up with his friend Chad King. Together, they formed the music duo A Great Big World in 2012.

Early Life and First Steps in Music
Ian Axel grew up in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He finished high school there in 2003. After that, he moved to Manhattan and went to NYU. In 2006, Ian started performing his own music.
His song "This Is The New Year" became popular. iTunes chose it as a special download. Its music video also gained many views on YouTube. The song was later used as the main theme for an MTV show. This show was a documentary series called I Used to Be Fat. It first aired on December 29, 2010.
Releasing His Album
Ian Axel's album was also called "This Is The New Year". He first released it himself in 2010. Then, he partnered with a company called tinyOGRE Entertainment. They released the album again. The digital version came out on February 15, 2011. The CD version was released on April 12, 2011.
"This Is The New Year" was also featured in a movie. It was in the opening part of Garry Marshall's film New Year's Eve. The partnership with tinyOGRE ended in December 2011. This happened when the company closed down.
Forming A Great Big World
In 2010, Ian's friend Chad King started joining him on stage. Chad was also a songwriter. In 2012, they decided to form a band. They called their band A Great Big World.
They became even more famous with their song "Say Something". They recorded this song as a duet with singer Christina Aguilera. This version of the song was a huge hit worldwide. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart.
