Ian Axel grew up in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He finished high school there in 2003. After that, he moved to Manhattan and went to NYU.

In 2006, Ian started performing his own music. His song "This Is The New Year" became very popular. It was chosen by iTunes as a special download. The song's music video also got a lot of views on YouTube.

"This Is The New Year" Success

"This Is The New Year" became the theme song for an MTV show called I Used to Be Fat. This show first aired in December 2010.

Ian Axel released an album with the same name, This Is The New Year, in 2010. It was later re-released in partnership with a company called tinyOGRE Entertainment. The song was also used in the opening of the movie New Year's Eve.

Forming A Great Big World

In 2010, Ian's friend and writing partner, Chad King, started joining him on stage more often. In 2012, they officially formed the band A Great Big World.

They became even more famous with their worldwide hit song "Say Something." They recorded this song as a duet with the famous singer Christina Aguilera. The song was a huge success, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart.

Ian Axel has appeared on several TV shows and radio programs. He made his first national TV appearance on the Rachael Ray show. NPR, a well-known radio station, praised his voice, saying it had "the sweetness of youth" and "the swagger of a rock star."
