Ian Anthony "Pete" Geoghegan (born 26 April 1939, died 15 November 2003) was a famous Australian race car driver. People knew him for his quick wit and amazing natural driving skills. He was often called "Pete" Geoghegan. He became one of the most well-known people in Australian motor racing during the 1960s and 1970s. His older brother, Leo Geoghegan, was also a talented driver. They often raced together in long-distance events.
Pete Geoghegan won the Australian Touring Car Championship five times. Only three other drivers have achieved this incredible feat. He won against other top drivers like Bob Jane, Norm Beechey, and Allan Moffat. He also won the famous Bathurst 1000 endurance race in 1973. For this win, he drove an XA Falcon GT with Allan Moffat for the Ford Works Team.
Later in his career, Geoghegan drove a Porsche Carrera. He used it to win the 1976 Australian Sports Car Championship. At the same time, he also raced a Holden HQ Monaro in the Australian Sports Sedan Championship. In 1999, Ian Geoghegan was honored by being added to the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame.

Australian Touring Car Championship Highlights
Ian Geoghegan was a true legend in the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC). He won this championship an amazing five times! These wins happened in 1964, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969. He often drove a powerful Ford Mustang during these winning years. His skill and consistency made him a champion.
In 1961, he finished second in the championship, driving a Jaguar Mk.I 3.4. He also secured third place in 1971, still driving his trusty Ford Mustang. In 1972, he finished fourth with a Ford XY Falcon GTHO Phase III. Even in 1978, he returned to the ATCC, driving a Holden LX Torana SS A9X. He even won a race at Sandown that year.
Bathurst 1000 Race History
The Bathurst 1000 is one of Australia's most famous endurance races. Ian Geoghegan competed in it many times. His biggest win came in 1973. He teamed up with Allan Moffat to win the race in a Ford XA Falcon GT Hardtop. This was a huge achievement in his career.
He also had other strong performances at Bathurst. In 1967, he finished second with his brother Leo Geoghegan. They drove a Ford XR Falcon GT. In 1980, he achieved another podium finish, coming in third place. He drove a Holden VB Commodore with Paul Gulson.
