Ian Millar is a famous Canadian athlete in the sport of show jumping. He was born on January 6, 1947. People often call him "Captain Canada" because he has been a top rider for so long. He holds an amazing record: he has competed in more Olympic events than any other athlete in any sport, with 10 appearances! He also won a silver medal at the Olympics.

About Ian Millar
Ian Millar was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He runs a farm called "Millar Brooke Farm" in Perth, Ontario. His children, Jonathon Millar and Amy Millar, and his daughter-in-law, Kelly Soleau-Millar, are also involved in the sport.
Ian Millar has received many honors for his achievements. In 1986, he became a Member of the Order of Canada. This is one of the highest awards a Canadian citizen can receive. He was also inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2013, he joined the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. He studied business and received an honorary degree from the University of Guelph.
Ian's Amazing Equestrian Career
Ian Millar has had a very successful career in show jumping. He has won the Canadian Show Jumping Championship twelve times! He was a key member of the Canadian Equestrian Team for many years. He has earned over $3.5 million in prize money at the famous Spruce Meadows competition in Calgary, Alberta.
Ian and Big Ben: A Special Partnership
One of Ian Millar's most famous horses was Big Ben (1976–1999). Together, they won more than 40 major titles around the world. They also won the Show Jumping World Cup two years in a row, in 1988 and 1989. At the Pan American Games in 1987, Ian and Big Ben won two gold medals. Ian has a total of nine Pan American Games medals, including four gold medals.
Olympic and International Success
Ian Millar has competed in more Olympic Games than any other athlete. His first Olympics was in 1972, and he competed in his tenth Games in London in 2012. He only missed the 1980 Games because Canada joined a boycott.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, when he was 61 years old, Ian Millar helped his team win a silver medal. He rode his horse, In Style, and completed a perfect round. This led the Canadian team to a jump-off for the gold medal against the United States. Canada finished second, earning Ian his first Olympic medal.
In the 2012 Summer Olympics, Ian competed with his horse, Star Power. He finished ninth in the Individual Jumping event, which was the best result for Canada. In the Team Jumping event, Ian and his teammates finished in fifth place.
In 2014, Ian Millar won the $1.5-million CP International at Spruce Meadows with his horse, Dixson. He had won this important competition twice before with Big Ben. In 2015, he won another gold medal at the Pan American Games in the team jumping event.
On May 1, 2019, Ian Millar announced he was retiring from international competitions. He decided to focus on coaching young riders and training new horses.
