Ibrahim Tannous (born 1929 – died December 26, 2012) was an important leader in the Lebanese Armed Forces. He was known for being very honest. People said he was a general who wasn't afraid to work hard. He wanted to build a strong and effective Lebanese Army.
General Tannous became the commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in December 1982. This was during the early years of the civil war. He worked with the Multinational Force. This group helped train the Lebanese Army. They also worked to bring peace back to Beirut.
Tannous was close to President Amine Gemayel. He decided to step down as army commander in June 1984. This was a way to help solve problems with other groups in the government. These groups wanted to change how the army was set up. Michel Aoun took over after him. Before Tannous left, the army was a big supporter of the government. This government was backed by the U.S.. After Tannous resigned, the army started to work more closely with Syria's plans.

His Military Journey
General Tannous began his military career in 1952. He joined the Military Academy as a Cadet Officer. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks. He became a second lieutenant in 1955. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1958. By 1965, he was a captain. He became a major in 1969. He reached the rank of colonel in 1980.
His hard work led him to many important roles. He worked in artillery regiments. He also served at the General Headquarters. He commanded battalions and regiments. He was a chief of staff for brigades. He also worked in finance and administration.
On December 8, 1982, he reached the top. He was promoted to general and then to lieutenant general. On that same day, he was appointed the Commander of the Armed Forces. He led the army during a difficult time. He worked to train and rebuild the forces. He stepped down from this role on June 23, 1984. He retired from the military in 1988.
