About Ibrahima Kassory Fofana
Ibrahima Kassory Fofana was born in Forécariah, a place in Lower Guinea. He grew up in a farming family with a history of Muslim religious leaders.
His Early Life and Education
After finishing his studies with high honors at the Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry in 1978, he started working for the government. He joined the research department of the ministry that handled international cooperation. He quickly moved up, becoming the director of international cooperation in 1986. By 1991, he was the director of public investments.
Becoming a Minister
Mr. Fofana became very important to the Guinean president, Lansana Conté. In 1994, he became a minister without a specific department. In this role, he managed big national projects. He also helped change government-owned companies and made economic changes to help Guinea's economy grow.
In 1996, he became the minister for the budget. This job involved managing the country's money and changing how government-related businesses worked.
Minister of Economy and Finance
In 1998, he was promoted to Minister of Economy and Finance. This was a very important job, and he held it until 2000. During this time, he worked with the IMF and the World Bank to improve Guinea's economy.
He also started Guinea's first program to fight corruption. This led to people being arrested and taken to court. He also helped clean up the list of government workers, which saved the country a lot of money.
While in these roles, he also represented Guinea at the African Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund. He was also a member of the boards of many companies in Guinea.
Leaving Government and Entering Politics
In 2000, Mr. Fofana left the government. He then went abroad, first to Senegal and later to the United States.
In 2002, he earned a special degree in development, finance, and banking from American University in Washington, D.C. After that, he worked as an international consultant.
Starting a Political Party
In 2009, he returned to Guinea and started a political party called Guinea for All (GPT). This party was known for not favoring any specific ethnic group. He was one of 24 candidates in Guinea's first democratic presidential election in 2010. He focused his campaign on good governance and regional cooperation. He finished 11th in the first round of voting. In the second round, he supported Alpha Condé, who won the election.
Later, he had disagreements with Alpha Condé about how the country's first democratic parliamentary elections were organized. He joined the opposition and took part in street protests to demand fair elections.
Working with President Alpha Condé
After the September 2013 elections, where his GPT party won one seat, he became friends with Alpha Condé again. President Condé asked for his help to improve Guinea's economy. Mr. Fofana decided to work with the president's team.
In 2014, he became a State Minister for investments and public-private partnerships under President Alpha Condé. This was a new and important job. He worked to get money and support from inside and outside Guinea for important projects. He helped bring in $20 billion in investments from countries like China.
He also managed President Alpha Condé's election campaign in 2015. In May 2018, he joined the RPG-Arc-en-Ciel, which was the ruling political group.
Becoming Prime Minister
On May 21, 2018, President Alpha Condé appointed Ibrahima Kassory Fofana as the Prime Minister of Guinea. He announced a big plan to reduce poverty. His goal was to help six million Guineans, or 40% of the population, rise out of extreme poverty by 2025.
Changes in Government
On September 5, 2021, the entire Guinean government was dissolved. This happened after President Condé was arrested and removed from power in a change of government.
