Ida Kristine Nielsen, born in 1975, is a talented musician from Denmark. She is known by her nicknames Bass Ida, Bassida, and Ida Funkhouser. Ida is a skilled bass player, a composer who writes music, and a vocalist who sings.
She has been a member of several famous bands. These include the Belgian group Zap Mama and the Danish pop rock band Michael Learns to Rock. She also played with the American funk band The New Power Generation and the funk rock trio 3rdeyegirl. The last two bands were the backing groups for the legendary musician Prince.
Ida's Musical Journey
Ida Nielsen began playing the bass guitar when she was 16 years old. She loved music so much that she decided to study it further. From 1993 to 1998, she attended the Royal Danish Academy of Music. There, she earned her diploma, focusing on the electric bass as her main instrument.
In 2008, Ida released her very first solo album. It was called Marmelade. This was a big step in her career as a solo artist.
Working with Prince
A major moment in Ida's career happened in 2010. She started working with the global music icon, Prince. She joined his band, The New Power Generation, as both a singer and a bassist.
Later, Ida became part of Prince's special musical trio, 3rdeyegirl. In this group, she played alongside guitarist Donna Grantis and drummer Hannah Welton. They went on tours across the UK, Europe, and North America. In 2014, the trio released their only album together, titled Plectrumelectrum.
In 2014, Ida released her second solo album, Sometimes a Girl Needs Some Sugar Too. One of her songs, "SHOWMEWHATUGOT," was from her later album "TurnItUp." Prince himself chose this song to be a "Purple pick of the week" on the music streaming service TIDAL when it came out.
Ida and Prince continued to work together closely until Prince's passing in April 2016. Later that same year, Ida released her third album, TurnItUp. She dedicated this album to Prince's memory. In an interview in 2017, she shared how much Prince influenced her. She said, "The most important thing Prince taught me was to play with my heart. Always!"
