The Story of Idlewild
The name "Idlewild" comes from a summer lodge that was built in this area in 1905. A man named Fred Cole from San Francisco owned this lodge. It was a popular spot for people to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Lake Tahoe.
The Idlewild Ship
Fred Cole also owned a large boat, a cruiser, which he named the Idlewild. This ship sailed on Lake Tahoe for many years, carrying passengers and exploring the lake. It was an important part of the area's history and helped people enjoy the natural beauty of the region.
The Ship's End
Sadly, the Idlewild ship's journey came to an end in 1942. It was pulled out of the water and placed on land. In December of that same year, a big storm hit the area. A tree was blown over by the strong winds and fell on the ship, crushing it. That was the end of the historic Idlewild cruiser.
