A Look Back: The Church's Story
From Monastery to Church
Long ago, this building started as a monastery. It was in a place called Trebes. Later, it became the church we know today in Trevías. The counts Gundemaro Pinioliz and Mumadomna officially opened the church in the year 1000.
Royal Gifts and Changes
In 1144, a powerful ruler named King Alfonso VII of León and Castile made a special gift. He gave the monastery to two women, Aldonza Fernández and her niece Urraca Bermúdez. After Urraca Bermúdez passed away, the monastery then went to the Monastery of San Vicente de Oviedo.
Exploring the Church's Design
What It Looks Like Today
You won't find any parts of the very first church building inside or outside today. The church you see now was mostly rebuilt in the 1800s. It was made even bigger and updated in the 1900s.
Special Stone and Shape
At the entrance, there is a special pink stone. This stone has an inscription, which is like a message carved into it. It tells us that the first church was finished on March 21, 1000. The church has a rectangular shape, like a long box. Inside, it has three main sections called naves.
Inside the Church
The middle section, or central nave, is wider and taller than the two sections on its sides. These sections are separated by rounded arches. The church has a flat roof. Behind the main altar, there is a large painting called a fresco. This painting shows the church's patron saint.
Art and Statues
The main altarpiece, which is a decorated screen behind the altar, shows the Archangel Gabriel. This beautiful piece of art was made in 1749. You can see statues of Saint Michael in the center, Saint Lucy on the left, and Saint Blaise on the right. In the left side section, there is another altarpiece from 1738, dedicated to the Rosary. On the right side, there is an altarpiece from 1766, showing Christ.
