Igor Nikolayev grew up in Kholmsk, a town in Russia. His father, Yury Nikolayev, was a poet who wrote about the sea. Igor studied music at the Moscow Institute of Culture. He learned how to compose pop songs there.

In the 1980s, he played keyboards for the famous singer Alla Pugacheva. He also helped arrange her music. In 1983, he became well-known. This happened after he wrote songs like "Iceberg" and "Tell, birds!" for Alla Pugacheva.
