Valery Yakovlevich Leontiev (Russian: Валерий Яковлевич Леонтьев; born on March 19, 1949) is a famous Russian singer, songwriter, and actor. He became very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1996, he was given the special title of People's Artist of Russia.
Valery Leontiev has achieved great success in many countries, especially in Eastern Europe. He is considered a pop icon, much like the famous singer Alla Pugacheva. He has also won many awards, including the ZD Awards.
In 1993, Valery Leontiev was a main performer at the Voice of Asia festival. He shared the stage with international music groups like Boney M. and singer Gloria Gaynor. Throughout his long career, he has released over 30 albums. Many of these albums sold millions of copies. Early Life and Beginnings
Valery Yakovlevich Leontiev was born on March 19, 1949. He was born in a small village called Ust-Usa in what is now Russia's Komi Republic. In 1961, his family moved to the city of Yuryevets.
His first big performance was in 1971 at a competition called "Song-71" in Vorkuta. He won second place with his song "Carnaval."
Musical Journey
In 1980, Valery Leontiev started performing in many concerts. He sang at famous venues like the Moscow Variety Theatre and Luzhniki. In 1981, he won a popularity award at the important music festival "Yerevan-81." American journalists at the event noticed his energetic style. They even compared him to the famous singer Mick Jagger.
In 1982, Valery Leontiev had a serious throat operation. This made his future singing career uncertain. But he recovered and continued to perform.

The early 1990s were a busy time for Valery Leontiev. He toured in many countries, including Germany, Israel, the USA, Canada, and India. In 1991, he won the "Best Selling Soviet Artist" award at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo.
In 1994, he performed with the famous actress Gina Lollobrigida in Saint-Petersburg. In 1996, he received the high honor of People's Artist of Russia. A special star with his name was placed on the Star Square in Moscow in March 1998. In 1999, he received the "Living Legend Award" at the "Ovation" music awards.
In 2011, he was a judge at the Crimea Music Fest.

Eurovision Song Contest 1987 Idea
The Soviet Union never took part in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, in 1987, there was an idea for them to join. George Veselov, who worked for the Soviet Ministry of Education, thought it would be a good way to improve relationships between the Soviet Union and Western countries.
Valery Leontiev was suggested as the singer for the Soviet Union's first entry. But the leaders of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, including Mikhail Gorbachev, thought it was too big a step. So, the Soviet Union never entered the contest before it broke apart.
