Illano (which is called Eilao in Eonavian) is a small area in the Principality of Asturias. This is one of the special regions of Spain.

Illano is surrounded by other towns and areas. To the north, it shares a border with Boal. To the south, it's next to San Martín de Oscos. On the east, it's bordered by Boal again, along with Villayón and Allande. Finally, to the west, you'll find Villanueva de Oscos and Castropol.

Discovering Illano's Location and Size

Illano is a municipality, which is like a local government area, in the northwest part of Spain. It's part of the beautiful region called Asturias, known for its green landscapes and mountains.

This municipality covers an area of about 102.70 square kilometers. To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of 10,000 football fields! It's a fairly small area, but it's packed with natural beauty.

Understanding Illano's Population

Illano is a very small place when it comes to the number of people living there. In 2018, only about 352 people called Illano home. This makes it one of the less populated areas in Asturias. Imagine a whole town with fewer people than in some schools!

How Illano is Governed

Like other towns and cities, Illano has a leader who helps run things. This leader is called an Alcalde, which is the Spanish word for Mayor. The current Mayor of Illano is Leandro López Fernández. He belongs to a political group called the PSOE. The Mayor and the local government make decisions about the services and rules for the people living in Illano.

Exploring Illano's Parishes

Within the municipality of Illano, there are smaller divisions called parishes. Think of them as neighborhoods or smaller villages that make up the larger area of Illano. Each parish has its own unique character.

Here are the parishes that belong to Illano:

  • Bullaso
  • Gío
  • Herías
  • Illano (This is also the name of the main town and a parish within the municipality!)
  • Ronda
