History of Villayón

Villayón has a long and interesting past, with signs of people living there for thousands of years.

Ancient Times and Roman Influence

Long ago, people built special structures in this area. You can still visit some ancient hill forts, which were old fortified settlements, and Dolmen, which are large stone tombs. These show us how early communities lived.

The Romans also came to Villayón. They were great builders! They constructed bridges that are still used today. This shows how well they built things and how important this area was.

Villayón in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages (a period from about 500 AD to 1500 AD), Villayón was part of a larger area called Navia, Asturias. It was not its own separate municipality yet.

Later, in 1868, the local church area (called a parish) officially separated. This made Villayón its own independent municipality.

Geography and Nature

Villayón is a beautiful place with interesting natural features.

Rivers and Waterfalls

The Río Navia is an important river that flows through the municipality. Rivers are vital for life and often shape the land around them.

One of the most famous natural spots in Villayón is the Oneta Falls (Cascada de Oneta). These waterfalls are the highest in all of Asturias! They are a popular place to visit and enjoy nature.
