History of Illiopolis
The name Illiopolis is a mix of two words. The first part, "Illio," comes from the state name Illinois. The second part, "polis," is a Greek word that means "city." So, Illiopolis basically means "Illinois City."

Formosa Plastics Plant
A large plant that makes PVC (a type of plastic) was built west of Illiopolis in 1962. It was first owned by Borden, Inc. Later, it was sold to Formosa Plastics Corporation in 2002.
In April 2004, the Formosa Plastics plant had a serious incident. The plant was closed for some time after this event. It did not reopen for several years. In 2007, a report explained that the incident happened because of a human error. An operator accidentally drained the wrong tank.
