Ilya Valentinovich Segalovich (born September 13, 1964 – died July 27, 2013) was a very important person in the world of technology. He helped start a big Russian company called Yandex. He was also the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and a director at Yandex from 2000 until he passed away in 2013. Ilya even came up with the name "Yandex" for the search engine! It means "Yet Another iNDEX".
Ilya was born in a city called Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) in Russia. He went to a special school for physics and math in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Later, he studied at the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute.

Ilya's Career and Yandex
Ilya started his career in 1990, working with computer programs that find information. He led a team at a company called Arkadia. From 1993 to 2000, he was in charge of finding information systems for CompTek International.
In 2000, Ilya left CompTek to help create Yandex. All three of these companies were started by his school friend, Arkady Volozh. Ilya had two daughters.
Helping Others
Ilya Segalovich was not just a tech expert; he also cared a lot about helping people. He helped start and supported a place called Maria's Children Art Rehabilitation Center. This center helps orphans and children who have special needs.
He earned a degree in geophysics from the Russian State Geological Prospecting University. This means he studied the Earth's physical processes and properties.
Ilya's Health Journey
In 2013, Yandex announced that Ilya Segalovich had passed away after a long illness. He died due to problems from stomach cancer.
Ilya's Financial Contributions
In 2011, a magazine called Forbes estimated Ilya Segalovich's wealth. They thought he was one of the richest businessmen in Russia. However, it was later found that this estimate was too high.
Reports showed that Ilya owned about 2.9% of Yandex. This was worth around $233 million. When Yandex first offered its shares to the public (called an IPO), Ilya sold some of his shares. He explained that he did this to invest in charity work. Before he passed away in 2013, Ilya owned 2.5% of Yandex, which was worth about $277 million.
