Imst's Rich History
Imst has a long and interesting past. It was first allowed to hold a regular market in 1282. This meant people could come together to buy and sell goods. For many centuries, Imst was an important part of the Austrian monarchy. It was the main town for its district within the Tyrol province. Imst officially became a full town in 1898.
Schemenlaufen: A Special Carnival
Every four years, Imst hosts a unique carnival celebration called Fasnacht. This event happens before Lent. It's so special that UNESCO has listed it as an important part of the world's cultural heritage. During the Schemenlaufen, pairs of men wear bells that are tuned differently. They perform dances with jumps and bows. Other masked characters join in, copying their dance moves.
Luge Track: A Winter Sport Hub
Imst is also known for its luge track. In 1958, the town built the first luge track that used artificial cooling. This meant it could stay icy even when the weather wasn't freezing. The track was 1,000.9 meters (3,283.8 feet) long and had 17 turns. It dropped 124.8 meters (409.4 feet) from start to finish.
This track hosted the FIL World Luge Championships twice, in 1963 and 1978. It also hosted the FIL European Luge Championships three times, in 1956, 1971, and 1974.
SOS Children's Village: A Home for Kids
In 1949, a man named Hermann Gmeiner started the very first SOS Children's Village in Imst. This village, located in the Sonnberg area, provided a loving home for children who had lost their parents or could not live with their families. Today, the SOS-Kinderdörfer organization runs over 450 such villages around the world. They help many children in need.
