History of Imst
Imst has a long and interesting history. The town was allowed to hold a regular market way back in 1282. This meant people could come to Imst to buy and sell goods.
For a long time, until 1918, Imst was part of the Austrian monarchy. This was a big empire ruled by an emperor. Imst was the main town of its district in the Tyrol province. Imst officially became a full town in 1898.
Schemenlaufen: A Special Carnival
Every four years, Imst hosts a very special carnival called Fasnacht. This event happens before Lent, a time of fasting. This carnival, known as Schemenlaufen, is so unique that UNESCO has listed it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. This means it's a cultural tradition worth protecting.
During Schemenlaufen, pairs of men wear bells that make different sounds. They perform dances with jumps and bows. Other people wear masks and join in, copying their dances. It's a lively and colorful celebration!
Imst's Luge Track
Imst is also famous for its luge track. In 1958, the world's first track that could be artificially cooled was built here. This meant they could make ice even when it wasn't super cold outside.
The track was over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) long. It had 17 turns and dropped 124.8 meters (409 feet) from start to finish. This made it a very exciting track for luge racers.
Imst's luge track has hosted many important races. It held the FIL World Luge Championships in 1963 and 1978. It also hosted the FIL European Luge Championships several times, including in 1956, 1971, and 1974.
SOS Children's Village
In 1949, a man named Hermann Gmeiner started something very special in Imst. He founded the very first SOS Children's Village in the Sonnberg area of the town.
An SOS Children's Village is a place where children who can't live with their own families can find a loving home. The SOS-Kinderdörfer organization, which started in Imst, now runs over 450 such villages all around the world. They help many children have a better life.
