Inchydoney (Irish: Inse Duine) is a small island located off the coast of West Cork, Ireland. It is connected to the mainland by two raised roads called causeways. The closest town to Inchydoney is Clonakilty.
Inchydoney is famous for its beautiful Blue Flag beach. A Blue Flag means the beach is very clean and safe. It is a popular spot for tourists, especially during the summer. The island has two main beaches, separated by a piece of land called the Virgin Mary headland. During the summer months, lifeguards are on duty at the headland to help keep everyone safe while swimming.
History of Inchydoney
Inchydoney has an interesting past. In 1584, Queen Elizabeth I of England took control of the island. She then gave it to the Church of Ireland Bishop of Ross.
Later, in 1642, a sad event happened near the island. After a battle in Clonakilty, about 600 Irish soldiers tried to escape towards Inchydoney. However, the tide was coming in quickly, and many were unable to reach the safety of the island.
