The Inconnue River (which means unknown river in French) flows through two towns in Quebec, Canada. These towns are Cap-Saint-Ignace and Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire. It is part of the Montmagny Regional County Municipality in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
The Inconnue River is a small river that feeds into the rivière des Perdrix. The water then flows into the Bras Saint-Nicolas, which eventually joins the Rivière du Sud (Montmagny). Finally, all this water makes its way to the mighty St. Lawrence River.
River's Path and Surroundings
The Inconnue River is surrounded by several other important waterways. These are like its neighbors in the water world.
- To the north: The rivière des Perdrix and the huge St. Lawrence River.
- To the east: Fortin stream, Bras Saint-Nicolas, and the Cloutier River.
- To the south: The rivière des Perdrix, Cloutier River, and the rivière du Sud (Montmagny).
- To the west: The rivière des Perdrix and the Morigeau River.
Where the River Starts
The Inconnue River begins its journey in the Notre Dame Mountains. This area is located in the town of Cap-Saint-Ignace. Many small streams from the mountains and forests come together to form the very beginning of the Inconnue River.
How the River Flows
From its starting point, the Inconnue River travels about 5.9 kilometers (about 3.7 miles). It flows through areas with mountains and thick forests.
Here's how its path is divided:
- For 3.1 kilometers (about 1.9 miles), it flows southwest through Cap-Saint-Ignace. This part ends at the border between Cap-Saint-Ignace and Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire.
- Then, for 2.8 kilometers (about 1.7 miles), it flows northwest through Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire until it meets another river.
The Inconnue River joins the Perdrix River (Bras Saint-Nicolas) in a small valley. This valley is just north of a mountain called Érables. The spot where the rivers meet is about 14.3 kilometers (8.9 miles) from the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. It's also about 8.4 kilometers (5.2 miles) north of Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire village.
Why "Inconnue"?
The name "Rivière Inconnue" was officially given to this river on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee in Quebec that names places. The name means "Unknown River" in French.
