The Independence Award (also known as Swadhinata Padak) is the highest honor given by the government of Bangladesh. It's like the biggest "thank you" the country can give! This special award started in 1977. It was created by President Ziaur Rahman.
The award goes to people or groups in Bangladesh. They get it for making huge contributions to their country. This includes helping in the War of Liberation or the Language Movement. It also covers fields like education, writing, journalism, and public service. Other areas include science, medicine, social studies, music, sports, and art.
Each person or group who receives the award gets a gold medal. They also get a special certificate of honor. Plus, they receive 500,000 Bangladeshi takas. That's about US$4109.
A special group of people in the government decides who should get the award. They make a list of nominees. Then, the head of the government gives the final approval. The award ceremony usually happens just before Independence Day in Bangladesh. Many important people attend this public event.
