How Tel Aviv Began
The story of Independence Hall starts with the city of Tel Aviv itself. In 1909, sixty-six families gathered near where the hall stands today. They held a lottery to choose plots of land for a new Jewish neighborhood. This new area was called Ahuzat Bayit.
Meir and Zina Dizengoff received plot number 43. They built their home on this land. Meir Dizengoff was a leader in the new neighborhood. In 1910, the people of Ahuzat Bayit decided to change the name of their neighborhood. They were inspired by Theodor Herzl's book, Altneuland, which means "Old-New Land." They chose the name Tel Aviv. As Tel Aviv grew into a city, Meir Dizengoff became its first mayor.
From Home to Art Museum
In 1930, Meir Dizengoff's wife passed away. He decided to give his house to the city of Tel Aviv. He asked that it be turned into a museum. The house was changed a lot to become a museum. In 1932, it opened as the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. The art museum stayed in this building until 1971. Then, it moved to a new, larger location.
Israel's Independence Day
The most famous event at Independence Hall happened on May 14, 1948. At 4 PM, leaders gathered in the main hall. David Ben-Gurion was there, along with members of the Jewish National Council. They were there to declare the establishment of the State of Israel. This happened just eight hours before the British rule of Palestine was set to end.
After Ben-Gurion read the Declaration of Independence, a blessing was said. Then, everyone signed the Declaration. The ceremony ended with the singing of Hatikvah. This song is now Israel's national anthem.
The Bible Museum
The upper floors of Independence Hall also have a special museum. This is a Bible museum. It displays old objects found by archaeologists. It also shows artworks that are based on stories from the Bible.
