Discovering India Square: A Special Neighborhood

India Square is a growing special neighborhood for Indian New Yorkers. It is part of the larger New York metropolitan area. The main street is Newark Avenue. It runs between Tonnele Avenue and JFK Boulevard. This area is also part of the bigger Journal Square District.

This part of Newark Avenue is always busy. You can find many grocery stores here, like Patel Brothers. There are also shops selling electronics, movies, and clothes. Many restaurants offer delicious Indian food. It is one of the busiest walking areas in the city. Sometimes, the crowds are so big that traffic stops for hours!

How Many People Live Here?

In 2000, about 13,000 people of Indian descent lived in this two-block area. This was a big jump from 3,000 people in 1980. The number kept growing between 2000 and 2010. By 2010, over 27,000 Asian Indians lived in Jersey City. This meant 10.9% of Jersey City's population was Asian Indian. This was the highest percentage in any major U.S. city. After dark, the shops light up with flashing signs. The streets stay full of people.

Expanding Little India

India Square is still the heart of Little India in Jersey City. It is located between Tonnele Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. But since 2019, Little India has been growing. It is expanding further east along Newark Avenue. It now reaches through Jersey City's Little Manila area. It goes all the way to Summit Avenue and the Five Corners neighborhood.

In 2023, a special archway sign was put up at the entrance to India Square. This sign helps mark the beginning of the area. You can also see a large white Bengal tiger mural painted on a street wall. It adds a beautiful touch to the neighborhood.

Fun Events and Festivals

Every spring, a colorful Holi festival takes place in Jersey City. This festival has been happening since 1992. It is centered around India Square. Lots of people join in the fun. News channels from all over the world often cover this exciting event.
