Mall History: A Look Back

Opening Day and Early Years

Indian Mound Mall welcomed its first shoppers on October 23, 1986. It was the very first indoor shopping mall in Licking County. The mall's first logo had a circle with lines and a feather. This feather represented Native American Indians, and the logo also said "Indian Mound Mall."

When it first opened, the main stores, called anchor stores, were Elder-Beerman, JCPenney, Lazarus, and Hills. In 1988, Crown Cinema was added to the back of the mall. There was also a cool fountain in the middle of the mall from 1986 until 1997.

Changes and New Stores

In 1997, the fountain was removed from the center of the mall. That same year, Sears opened in the mall, replacing a smaller store nearby. The Crown Theaters also got bigger, going from six screens to eleven screens. It then became known as a Hollywood Theater. Later, in 2016, AMC Theaters bought the Hollywood Theater.

In 1998, the Elder-Beerman store got bigger. However, it closed its doors on August 26, 2018.

More Stores Come and Go

A Target store opened right next to the mall in July 1995. In 1999, the Hills store was replaced by Ames. Ames then closed in 2002. Another store called Steve & Barry's moved into that empty space in 2004.

Lazarus closed in 2004 and became Goody's the next year. Goody's closed in May 2008. In 2011, Dick's Sporting Goods opened in that spot. Steve & Barry's was replaced by Big Sandy in 2017.

Some restaurants in the mall's Food Court also closed over time. Lee's Kitchen Chinese restaurant, which was the last restaurant in the Food Court, closed in March 2020. Other places like Seraphinas coffee shop and Osaka Japanese Grill also closed.

Recent Additions and Changes

In August 2019, it was announced that the Sears store would close in December 2019.

A new anchor store, Altitude Trampoline Park, opened on November 18, 2020. It took up part of the old Elder-Beerman space. Also, Apex Fitness Center is now open 24 hours a day for people to work out.

There is also a special center in the mall called Blend. It helps people with developmental disabilities. It opened in a part of the Big Sandy section of the mall.
