History of Heath
Long ago, the area where Heath is now was home to the Hopewell people. They lived here until about the first century CE. These ancient people built huge earthworks, which are large structures made from earth.
Ancient Earthworks
The Hopewell people built burial mounds and other large earth structures. Many of these are now protected at the Moundbuilders State Memorial, located on the north side of Heath.
Heath is also home to part of the Newark Earthworks. This includes the Great Circle Earthwork. Other parts of the Newark Earthworks are in nearby Newark, Ohio. The entire complex once covered over 3,000 acres.
Before 1850, the Smithsonian Institution studied and mapped these amazing structures. The Newark Great Circle is very large, about 1,054 feet (321 meters) wide. It's one of the biggest circular earthworks in the Americas. It has walls that are 8 feet (2.4 meters) high, with a moat (a deep ditch) that is 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep inside the walls. The entrance is even bigger.
The Ohio History Connection operates the Newark Earthworks as a state park. In 2006, it was named the "official prehistoric monument of the State of Ohio." It is also a National Historic Landmark.
Modern Settlement and Growth
People from Europe didn't start settling in this area until the 1800s. Much of the land was used for farming. Sadly, some of the ancient earthworks were damaged or destroyed by farming and other building projects over time.
After World War II, the Newark Air Force Base was built here. It was open for 35 years. This base was important for aerospace guidance and measurement for the United States Air Force.
Heath officially became a village in 1952. Richard Hoback was elected as its first mayor. The village grew very quickly. In 1960, about 2,426 people lived there. By 1965, the population had grown to 6,066. Because of this growth, Heath became a city in 1965. It was the 196th city in Ohio.
In 1986, the Indian Mound Mall opened in Heath. It was the first and only indoor shopping mall in Licking County. By 1990, Heath's population reached 7,231. Today, Heath is one of the three cities in Licking County. Other nearby towns include Newark, Granville, and Hebron.
