Indigo Lake, often called just Indigo, is a beautiful lake located in Alaska. It lies about ten miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Sitka, a city on the western coast of Baranof Island. This island is part of the Alexander Archipelago, a group of islands in southeastern Alaska.

Why is it Called Indigo Lake?

The lake gets its name from its incredibly deep and mysterious indigo blue color. This special color makes it stand out. A local person from Sitka, Robert N. DeArmond, reported the name in 1954 to the USGS.

What Does Indigo Lake Look Like?

Indigo Lake is shaped like a circle. It is about eight-tenths of a mile (1.3 kilometers) across. The lake is surrounded by very steep walls and cliffs. This makes it look quite dramatic and enclosed.

Exploring the Area Around the Lake

The southern part of Indigo Lake is important for hikers. It forms a key part of the trail that leads to Peak 5390. This peak is a notable landmark in the area.
