Ines Torelli (born Ines Stierli on June 14, 1931 – died August 21, 2019) was a famous Swiss comedian, radio star, and actress. She performed on stage, in movies, and on TV, mostly in Swiss German.

Ines Torelli's Early Life and Training

Ines Torelli grew up in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Her father was Walter Stierli. When she was young, around 1948-1950, she worked as a helper in French-speaking Switzerland. This was called a Welschlandjahr. Many young women did this to learn French better.

Ines taught herself how to act and perform. She got her first chance in a group called "Cabaret Rüeblisaft" from 1954 to 1956. After that, she joined the Cabaret Federal in Zürich. She also went on tours with other performers, like Schaggi Streuli.

Her First Big Stage Roles

At the Theater am Hechtplatz, Ines Torelli played the main roles in many musicals. In 1965, she starred in "Bibi Balù." In 1967, she was in "Golden Girl." She also performed in "Pfui Martina" in 1968 and "Viva Banana" in 1972. In 1968, she acted with Ruedi Walter and Margrit Rainer in "Die kleine Niederdorf-Oper" at the Corso Theater in Zürich.

Ines Torelli's Career in Theater and Media

Ines Torelli performed in many funny plays at the Bernhard Theater Zürich. She often worked with Jörg Schneider and Paul Bühlmann. For example, she was in "Mademoiselle Pepsi" in 1968, "Der keusche Lebemann" in 1972, "Die Schwindelfiliale" in 1974, and "Der fidele Casimir" in 1976.

In 1977, she tried a solo show called "Torelli total." It was artistically good, but it did not make a lot of money. Still, she kept acting in comedies. She performed in "Potz Millione" with Rainer and Walter in 1979/80. This play was directed by Inigo Gallo and was very popular on tour. In 1982, she was in "Acapulco, Madame" at the Theater am Hechtplatz.

Singing and Children's Theater

Ines Torelli was also a very popular singer. One of her famous songs was "De Gigi vo Arosa." She also played Iduna in "Der schwarze Hecht" at the Corso Theater in 1981.

From 1986 to 1994, she led the Zürcher Märchenbühne, which is a children's theater. She created her own Swiss German version of Räuber Hotzenplotz. She also worked with Jörg Schneider on many musicals for children.

Radio, TV, and Film Appearances

Ines Torelli became well-known through her many radio shows. She also acted in Swiss and German films. These included Oberstadtgass in 1956 and an episode of Fascht e Familie. Besides stage and TV, she was very popular for her fairytale radio plays. She often made these with Jörg Schneider and Paul Bühlmann.

In 1993, Ines Torelli moved to Canada with her husband. They lived on the Lunenburg peninsula. In 1996, they bought an old factory and turned it into the Starlight Theatre. This theater could hold up to 500 people. However, the theater did not make enough money and had to close at the end of 1998.

Ines Torelli's Personal Life

Ines Torelli was a citizen of Wettswil am Albis in the Canton of Zürich and Aristau in the Canton of Aargau. In 1991, she married Edi Baur. He was a Swiss theater director and actor. Edi Baur passed away on October 14, 2009. Even though Ines lived in Canada, she remained good friends with Jörg Schneider until he died in 2015.

Ines Torelli passed away at her home in Rose Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada on August 21, 2019. She was 88 years old.
