Maria of Spain was a young Spanish princess, also known as an Infanta, who lived for only one month in 1603. She was a member of the powerful House of Habsburg, a royal family that ruled many parts of Europe for centuries.
A Short Royal Life
Infanta Maria was born on February 1, 1603. She was the second daughter of Philip III of Spain, who was the King of Spain and Portugal, and his wife, Margaret of Austria.
Maria was born in Valladolid, a city in Spain. At that time, Valladolid was the main home for the Spanish royal family, from 1601 to 1606. Sadly, Infanta Maria passed away when she was just one month old, on March 1, 1603.
Her Final Resting Place
Infanta Maria was laid to rest in a special royal burial site. This place is called the Panteon de Infantes at El Escorial. El Escorial is a huge historical building in Spain that includes a palace, monastery, and royal burial grounds.
She is buried in the sixth chamber of this mausoleum, which is a grand tomb for royal children. Her tomb has a simple Latin inscription that says:
MARIA, PHILIPPI III FILIA
This means "Maria, Daughter of Philip III."
