A Glimpse into Inglenook's Past
Early Inhabitants of Inglenook
Long before Inglenook got its current name, people lived in the area. A group known as the Tuluwat Pattern people made their home in the Inglenook Fen. They lived there around 400 to 600 CE. These people are named after Tuluwat Island, which is further north along the California coast.
How Inglenook Started
In 1877, a blacksmith named James W. Nichalson moved to Inglenook. He opened a blacksmith shop, which was a very important business back then. Later, he even became a justice of the peace, helping to settle local disagreements.
A post office opened in Inglenook in 1880. It was located inside the town's general store. This post office helped people send and receive mail until it closed in 1919.
The Great 1906 Earthquake
Even though Inglenook is far from San Francisco, the big 1906 San Francisco earthquake affected the community. The earthquake was so strong that it knocked down the chimneys of all the houses in Inglenook. Many local trees were also toppled by the shaking.
Community Center and Its History
Inglenook also had a schoolhouse for its children. Over time, this schoolhouse became a National Grange hall. A Grange is a community organization that supports farmers and rural life.
From 2013 to 2020, there was a disagreement involving the Grange hall. While this was happening, the Grange was renamed the Fort Bragg–Inglenook Community Center. Today, it serves as a place for community gatherings and activities.
